Merry Christmas!!

See all posts by

The snow has finally thawed, and with a fridge full of christmas leftovers, a rather sluggish version of myself went out for a long run today.
I have a brand new toy, my new running watch, which I thought I knew how to use until a quarter of a way through my run, when I realised that the time wasn’t showing, just distance.
I didnt want to stop and carried on catching a glimpse of the occassional church clock to see how I was progressing.
I should have done 1hr 45mins, but ended up 1hr24mins, but about 8.5miles. Not bad considering I’ve had a week off and alot of food.
Hoping to get back on schedule soon.

Days 14&15

Two freezing runs!
Did a 50min steady run on Tuesday, but my last run was Thursday morning. Initially I went out at 9am, but decided against it, as there was hidden ice everywhere. I went out at midday and did a 40min Hill Run, instead of the Long Run I was due to do. The wind was so cold, my hands never actually warmed up.
Then Thursday night the biggest snowstorm I’ve seen in Southend for years.
I knew it would be hard to keep up the training during the christmas holidays, but there’s really have no chance at all to go out runnning with snow and ice on the ground, it’s not worth risking injury for a missed run.
I’m not a member of a gym, and wasn’t really tempted to join until now, I’ve never done treadmill training.
What should we do in these situations? Any suggestions would be appreciated, I guess I’ll just give my legs rest until the weather warms up.

First Havens Training Run!

Thank you to all those 40+ runners who came to our first training run on Sunday 13th December.Training06_new

It was a bit cold and some of the runners who chose the longer route were caught in the rain, but it was lovely to see everyone being supported by one another, and of course the wonderful Benfleet Running Club guys.

Our runners are very advanced and many are doing 13+ miles. Have a lovely Christmas – eat, drink, be merry and we’ll see you in January 2010!

Day 13 team training run.

I was quite worried about this run, as I wasn’t sure if I was up to the speed and distance yet.
But it was a really great session, it was great to run with some experienced runners, and also have a chat whilst running. I am so used to running alone, this made a welcome change.
The pace was quite fast, and I didn’t notice this until I had a look at my pace at the end of the run, we managed a 8.7mile run in 1hr23mins. It was very rewarding, my legs are a little tired today, but I’m very happy to have taken part.
I am now really looking forward to the next team training run, and hope to be able to do the 12mile run by then.

Day 12

Thursday was my first attempt at a hill training run, I usually avoid hills as much as possible, so this was a daunting task. I chose an area near where I live and basically ran up and down a number of roads in a row which are on a hill. I managed twelve reps and it was strangely enjoyable, 3miles of running, and legs feeling OK.

Sunday’s Team Run

Hi All,

It was great to meet so many of you on Sunday and good to see the excelletn spirit starting to build already. We will need that camaraderie in the cold months to keep motivated & disciplined.

I enjoyed my run on Sunday. The course makes a nice change & weren’t we lucky with the weather! I was intending to go a little slower as I had tired legs due to training for the previous 3 days. It was only after about 10 miles that I discovered I was running with a super fast athlete who has finished the marathon in 3 hours 7 mins! Nevertheless, it went roughly to plan & I didnt overdo it. After suffering injuries every time I’ve run the marathon before, I am determined to be sensible this time!

I am now regularly completing about 30 miles per week over 4 or 5 sessions. It would be great to get some company for the longer weekend runs though.

I generally do a steady 6 mile run on a Saturday morning starting from Rochford Hundred Rugby club (I run whilst my son is doing his rugby trainign) at around 10:30am. On Sunday’s I tend to fit it around the boys rugby & aim for a 10-12 mile run at @8:30-9:00 minute mile pace either in the morning or aroudn 3pm. If anyone fancies joining me, please let me know. It would be great to get a small group going who can regularly meet up for training runs.

Well it’s a day off from training today. Tomorrow I aim to run into work (@5 miles steady) which means an early train (6:00 – 6:15) & then a tempo or interval run on Wednesday evening. Not sure how I am going to fit one in on Thursday yet so I may have to delay that until Saturday.

I hope you are all well and efeling good after yesterday’s run. If I don’t see or hear from you before, best wishes for Christmas & good luck to anyone who is going out for a boxing day run!! Neil Dobson.marathon finish 2009

Day 10 & 11

A tale of two runs; Sunday, did a very ropey 30min Fartlek, 3miles of completely blocked nose, so breathing through my mouth too much, gave myself a sore throat, and felt like my lungs had the capacity of two baked beans. Running can be unpleasant, the aftermath of coughing also very off putting. Should I run with a cold? I never know, I guess its best to listen to your body.
Anyway, today, wow, what a difference. A really beautiful sunny day, running under clear blue skies, I did 50mins of quality running and ran 5.3 miles, which is very good for me. Apart from a slighty embarassing running nose, my faith in running has returned. Thank goodness.

Training day 10

A lovely sunny but very chilly day.
Had a chance to do a 1hr15min long run, took the seafront route up to Shoebury and back, a lovely run did 7.3miles.
Can anyone tell me what Interval Training is all about, i keep reading articles about it, but Im still not too sure how to go about this, any advice would be very much appreciated.

Frustrating training week! Day 8 & 9

It’s been very difficult to actually have time for running this week, Sunday; only had time to do a 30min run instead of the long run I had planned. Although I had a good workout and managed a Fartlek run.
Since then I’ve missed another run, but managed to go out in the rain today.
Decided on a more interesting 50min SR, went into Leigh and along the cliffs, coming back down Belton Way and through Old Leigh and Cinder Path. Which I think is 5miles, but my GPS stopped half way through. It felt like a very good run.
Hopefully I’ll get to catch up on my LR tomorrow.
